The Springer Nature Experiments Team is excited to announce a new pilot partnership with protocols.io.

A notable recent trend is the increasing digitization of research labs. Shifting from analog (paper-based) documentation with disparate workflows for data collection, analysis, and reporting to seamless and fully interoperable digital workflows is fundamentally changing how bench work, and lab work more generally, is done.

Springer Nature’s experience in publishing protocols and methods positions us to explore new ways of serving to researchers who are using (or will be using) tools like electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) and lab information management systems (LIMs). That’s where protocols.io comes in. Protocols.io is a tech startup that runs the protocols.io platform; a collaborative platform and preprint server allowing users to run, share, manage, and publish lab protocols. Protocols.io leverages mobile and web technology to accelerate and increase the reproducibility of scientific research. With Springer Nature as a leading publisher and protocols.io being a leading digital lab platform provider, a pilot partnership is an ideal fit.

As part of the pilot project, 35 Open Access (CC-BY) Springer Protocols articles have been reformatted and made available on protocols.io. These reformatted articles make use of protocols.io’s advanced platform features (e.g., lab timers, protocol “forking”, commenting and ratings, etc.).

The pilot partnership itself will run for one year. After that time, we’ll evaluate how to move ahead in ways best serving the protocols and methods community. In the meantime, you’re very much invited to check out Springer Nature’s workspace on protocols.io and you’re encouraged to sign up (for free) to protocols.io to get the maximum benefits the platform offers.

Special thanks goes out to the Springer Nature Experiments Team and other colleagues for their support. And an especially big thanks goes out to the protocols.io Team for the excellent support.

In case of any questions about this pilot project, don’t hesitate to reach out:
